Living minutes from Laguna Beach and Southern California's stunning coastlines, Bob Averill is surrounded by daily opportunities to discover subject matter that speaks to the soul. His artistic journey extends far beyond his local shores - frequent road trips along the Pacific coastline, into regional mountains, and throughout the Southwest deserts provide endless inspiration for his paintings. These adventures also fuel his passion for surfing, skiing, and mountain biking in these incredible locations, deepening his connection to the landscapes he paints.
Bob's artistic path began in boyhood and was nurtured during his teens through studies with a local South Bay artist, where he explored oil and pastel mediums while refining his ability to capture both what he sees and what he feels in the world around him. Recently, he has embraced his passion for art full-time, focusing primarily on landscapes and seascapes while often incorporating man-made elements - buildings, surfboards, mountain bikes - that reflect our human relationship with nature.
Bob believes that when properly applied, technology can complement our natural world without destroying it. This is a delicate balance we must pursue as individuals and societies. He feels we can learn much from indigenous cultures who achieved sustainability millennia ago, understanding how to modify lands and waters to suit human needs in beneficial rather than destructive ways.
As an artist, Bob works primarily in acrylic on canvas, linen, and occasionally wood panel, though he may explore oils, pastels, and watercolors as inspiration strikes. His interpretive realist style allows him to faithfully capture the essence of his subjects while honoring their inherent beauty. Sometimes he enhances portions of a work to more accurately convey the deeper message the painting seeks to express.
