Artist Bio
Rebecca is a self-taught artist based in the sun-soaked shores of Southern California. Drawing inspiration from the rhythmic pulse of the Pacific and the vibrant local surf culture, Rebecca's work is a vivid celebration of coastal life and the mesmerizing interplay of light and water.
As a devoted but still kind of mediocre surfer, Rebecca has developed an intimate relationship with the ocean, which is reflected in her captivating paintings. Her canvases come alive with dynamic depictions of curling waves, their translucent forms illuminated from within, capturing the fleeting magic of light passing through water. The artist's keen eye for detail extends beyond the waves, encompassing iconic elements of surf culture such as VW vans and beetles set against the backdrop of sun-drenched beaches.
Rebecca's artistic exploration doesn't stop at the water's surface. She is equally fascinated by the underwater world. This passion is evident in her paintings that portray the dance of light on the ocean floor, offering viewers a glimpse into the serene beauty of the subaquatic realm.
In addition to paintings, Rebecca creates unique light sculptures using driftwood collected from local beaches. These pieces are a testament to her ability to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, transforming discarded wood into luminous works of art that echo the organic forms and light patterns found in nature.
Through her multifaceted artistic practice, Rebecca invites viewers to experience the beauty, energy, and tranquility of coastal life. Each piece, whether a painting or sculpture, is infused with the artist's deep connection to the ocean and her commitment to capturing the ephemeral play of light in its many forms.
Rebecca's work serves as a vibrant reminder of the natural wonders that surround us, encouraging viewers to pause and appreciate the luminous beauty of our coastal environments.
Artist Statement
I've always found solace in the arts, but it wasn't until later in life that I fully embraced my passion for painting. The demands of my career and family life initially left little room for artistic pursuits, but as my children grew older and my professional path stabilized, I found myself drawn back to the canvas with renewed vigor.
My journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with my love for the ocean. Surfing became my refuge from the stresses of my work life, offering not just physical exhilaration but also a profound connection to nature. This connection inevitably spilled onto my canvases, inspiring me to capture the dynamic interplay of light and water that I witness during my time in the waves.
Self-taught and driven by curiosity, I've developed a style that celebrates the vibrant coastal life of Southern California. My paintings are an exploration of the fleeting moments of beauty I encounter - the translucent curl of a wave, the dance of light on the ocean floor, the iconic imagery of surf culture set against sun-drenched beaches. Each piece is a meditation on the transformative power of nature and its ability to provide solace and inspiration.
Beyond painting, I've discovered joy in creating light sculptures from driftwood, seeing the potential for beauty in what others might overlook. This practice has taught me to find extraordinary possibilities in ordinary objects, mirroring the way I've learned to find moments of creativity and peace within a busy life.
Perhaps most importantly, through art and surfing, I've found a community of supportive women who share my passions. This network has become an invaluable source of encouragement and inspiration, reminding me of the power of shared experiences and mutual support.
My art is an invitation to pause, to appreciate the luminous beauty of our coastal environment, and to find moments of tranquility in our often hectic lives. It's a reflection of my personal journey - finding balance, embracing creativity, and celebrating the healing power of nature and community."
